After The Movie, Now We Have Got ‘Pink’ Rickshaws For Women!

Honestly, I wanted Pink –cabs rather! Well, let’s Welcome April, women in Bengaluru will be able to hail pink auto rickshaws, reserved for their habit. To be distributed under the welfare schemes of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, the machines will get fitted with CCTV Cameras and GPS trackers and will hit the roads by the end of and GPS trackers and will hit the roads by the end of March.

The movement was determined after the administrative body planned to set aside 20% of its parking slots for adult females.

Although women in Bengaluru have hailed the move, they are concerned if CCTV footage will be continuously monitored or not.

“We plan to give out 500 pink autos under our welfare systems. We will provide Rs 80,000 in subsidy for each auto rickshaw, and the beneficiary will have to compensate the remainder. The drivers can be men or women, merely if the latter comes forward, they will be given preference.

We will offer a special preparation program for male drivers to behave with woman passengers better,” said Abdul Rakeeb Zakir, chairperson of the BBMP standing committee for social justice and public assistance.

Pink auto rickshaws are the latest in a series of women-friendly measures announced by the city’s civic agencies, such as Pink Hoysalas, women’s-only coach on the Metro and pink seats on BMTC buses.

Women have hailed the move, but say these auto rickshaws alone might not guarantee their safety. Amira Raman, a tech professional, said, “Since the auto rickshaws will be reserved for women, the number of people desiring to employ them will come down by half. This way, I don’t have to haggle over the price. However, if the CCTV feed is not being monitored, then there is no point in having it.”

Expressing that a few pink auto rickshaws might be increased based on the response, mayor Sampath Raj said, “We have written to the transport department for the permits, and will float tenders for the vehicles soon.”

“Since the mass rapid transport system in the city is inadequate, many adult females are left stranded at Metro stations and bus stops late at nighttime as they find it difficult to get auto rickshaws. This movement should help rectify that,” he appended.

Bengaluru is not the first city that is getting up with pink autos meant to help women. Many cities in Odisha, Gujarat, U.P., And Assam, have also launched pink auto services for adult females.
